Cross Country Competition

Our school cross country will be held this Thursday (weather permitting). Over the last 6 weeks we have been training toward this event nearly every day. Our times have been taken each time, and all of us have improved our times since the first go, so we know our fitness has improved. Today we did a walk-through of the course we will be running on Thursday, and we are looking forward to doing our best!

Heart Jam

To support 'Heart Children New Zealand' our whole school participated in Heart Jam at 10am today. We did several Jump Jam routines and it was great to see the enthusiasm and effort that everyone put in. All money raised from the gold coin collection goes to supporting Child and Youth programmes run for children with heart conditions.

Fire Station Visit - C'mon Guys get Fire Wise!

We went to our local fire station today to learn about how to be fire wise. Mike the fire fighter taught us about 'get down, get low, get out'. He also said that it is very important to stay out and if possible to call 111 for emergency fire services. We got given a booklet that has different activities to complete, including a map so that we can plan our escape route in our own house if there was a fire. If you want more information go to the Firewise website.

We went into the smoke room and we could not see anything in front of us just like it would be in a real fire:

The fire truck is ready to go to the next call out:

Fantastic Fijian coins

This is a map of Fiji. You can interact with it by zooming in and out so you can see how far it is from New Zealand.

Corey and his family travelled to Fiji for a week long holiday. They played Crazy Putt, went swimming in the hotel pool, tried jetskiing, and went fishing. Fried eggs were on the menu most days for breakfast! Lucky Corey! Corey brought some Fijian coins to school to show us. We like the $1 coin the best because it is different to our New Zealand money.

Rainy Rainbow

This morning Corey and Domonic saw a rainbow outside. They came in to get the camera to take a photo of it. They said the rainbow was quite light, and it was hard to see. Can you see it in the photo? Find out how a rainbow is formed by going to Ask Kids.

Discovery Learning!

Today during Discovery Time we made cut-out animals and pyramids. We did a pyramid puzzle and some other puzzles that made us think hard. Some students put on a puppet show and it was funny. Our favourite activity is the Reading Tent, as we get to sit inside a small tent and read quietly. It is like going camping!

Zero Waste Education

Today Sandra from Zero Waste Education visited our school. She talked about refuse, reusing, and recycling.

We discovered that black sand is magnetic. We thought it looked fluffy on the end of the magnet. Black sand is a natural resource that we use to make steel cans. If you recycle steel cans (once you have emptied the can, washed the can, and then squashed it) they can be made into buildings and bridges.

'Back in My Day' - School Trip to Southward Car Museum

Our whole school went on a trip to the Southward Car Museum on the 7th of May as part of our Social Sciences unit 'Back in My Day'. We are focusing on transport and how it played a part in shaping the Tokomaru community.
