Speeches - If I Ruled the World...

It would be an interesting world if Room 1 students were to rule it, that's for sure!  Everything from kids would be able to drive to everything been made out of food!

Some excerpts from our speeches:

"If I ruled the world everyone would go to Hogwarts School.  You would have a wand and I would use magic to do my jobs - just a wave of my wand and my chores are done" Ryan - Year 5

"If I ruled the world I would make it snow every day.  You might ask me why I would do this.  You will be thinking about all the hassles that snow causes: the cold, slippery roads - but have a thought for all the positives" Jordan - Year 3

"If I ruled the world I would be the most important person in the world.  I would be going to cool restaurants every night for dinner" Brooklyn - Year 4

"If kids could drive cars, mums and dads could get a sleep in because kids could drive to school!" Teigan - Year 4

"If you played rugby every day, you would learn the importance of team work - your mates would be passing and kicking to you.  It also might help you have fun which is really important too" Tyler S - Year 3

"If I ruled the world kids wouldn't go to school. Kids could do better stuff than working at school all day long because school is more about doing handwriting, spelling, writing, maths, and reading instead of what I want to do!" Cody - Year 3

"Kids should be able to drive cars so they can go on holiday by temselves or go on a trip to their grandad's house.  The cops won't even be able to arrest them because in the world that I rule kids are allowed to drive" Ella - Year 2

"All toys would be $20 and under if I ruled the world so children can buy themselves toys anytime because they would be so cheap" Shayde - Year 4

"If I ruled the world kids could drive cars.  You could get to school as quickly as you want - you don't have to wait for your mum to take you.  On the way we could buy stuff like lollies and iceblocks!" Josh W - Year 2

"If I ruled the world, the world would be made of food.  Our houses would be big sandwich houses with lettuce, ham, chicken, cheese, mayonnaise and sauce - all for our furniture" Kobe - Year 4

"If I ruled the world my birthday would be every day...I would be the eldest in my family.  The house would be filled with presents.  My little brother would be crying that I have heaps of toys!  I would have birthday cake for tea instead of veges...So when I rule the world you better be ready to buy me lots of presents!" Cameron - Year 3

"If I ruled the world I would help homeless people with their food, water, and homes.  There are so many people that I would be able to help in New Zealand and in so many other countries" Tyler - Year 4

"If I ruled the world everyone would like dinosaurs because I like dinosaurs because I like dinosaurs!  People would only be able to read books about dinosaurs because they are full of facts and lots of pictures of dinosaurs" Sean - Year 4

"I would give the homeless homes because they need our help...I would give the hungry food because they need it...I would give everyone a family so they will be happy" Luccas - Year 4

"Hi, I'm Corey and if I ruled the world people would only get what they need not what they want.  OK, let's get this show on the road...Health is a need in my world...Food is a thing that everyone needs...Shelter is another thing we all need...So the needs list: School, a house, a noce family, and a bit of money" Corey - Year 4

"I would help people if they asked for anything...In my world there would be no homeless and everyone would have good hope for the future" Josh - Year 4

"If I ruled the world everyone would play rugby.  Rugby is about having fun and buddies playing together and practises are a good way of working together and learning what you need to do before the next game" Eli - Year 2

"I would give out free internet, only the best computers in the world...A free wireless modem would be given out to everyone so that you would all have access to all the amazing technologies available" Lukaz - Year 5

"I love helping people because it is fun to help people who need it.  If I ruled the world I would give people money so they can buy the medicine and food that they need" Tessa - Year 4

GetWise: The Island of Wants and Needs

This morning we were separated into 4 families:

Teigan, Lukaz, Kobe, Josh W, Josh - Family 1 has a new baby.

Jordan, Luccas, Tyler S, Eli - Family 2 has a cat.

Ella, Ben, Sean, Ryan, Cameron - Family 3 has a member with a bad cold.

Brooklyn, Cody, Shayde, Corey, Tyler - Family 4 has two children.
Each family was told that they were going to a deserted island with just one suitcase.  Sounds easy?  Not when your family can only take 6 items from this shopping list:

- A tent
- Matches
- A comic book
- Food
- Cat food
- A ball
- Sun screen
- A bottle
- Fairy floss
- Cough medicine
- A Scrabble board
- A stereo

Each group had a big discussion about what they were taking to the deserted island and justified why they were taking it.  Families got points if they had thought about their needs versus their wants, taking into account different scenarios like a thunderstorm or extra cold nights.

Family 4 were the only family to choose only what we considered needs from the items, selecting to take the tent, matches, food, sun screen, the bottle, and cough medicine.

What would you take from the list?
Which items do you consider to be wants?

Get Wise! With ASB...

"Spend some money on you but save some too" was the message from an ASB Get Wise representative that visited us today.

We learnt about currency, spending and saving, and Eftpos cards.  Some of us became Eftpos machines and shops, while Teigan played a bank!

Check out some photos of our learning:

Hmmm - an Eftpos card perhaps?

Learning about currency - who can remember what the currencies of South Africa and Japan are?

"I am a caveman who wants to trade with you because I don't have money yet!"

Teigan "the bank" and Jordan "the CD shop"

The bank "communicates" with the shop to let them know if the customer has enough money to pay for their purchase.

The ATM machine hasn't got any money left!  You'll have to go and earn some more!

Some of our wonderings:

How do you know how much money you have to spend before you buy something?
How do you use money wisely?
Can you get money out at the bank instead of a machine?
How does the bank know how much money everyone has?
Do you have to pay a fee for the cards from the bank?
How can you tell the difference between an Eftpos card and a credit card?
How many credit cards are you allowed?
